    • The sustainable urban ceramic drainage system begins to be installed within the framework of the LIFE CERSUDS project

    The work on the Sustainable Urban Drainage System, which uses ceramics of low commercial value within the European LIFE CERSUDS project, which is being coordinated by the Instituto de Tecnología Cerámica (ITC) with the participation of IIAMA-UPV, CCB, CTCV, CHM, Benicàssim City Council and Trencadís de Sempre, S. A., has already begun in Torre Sant Vicent street from Benicàssim (Castellón-Spain).
    LIFE CERSUDS aims to improve the ability of cities to adapt to climate change and promote the use of green infrastructures in urban development.
    Work has started on the Calle Sant Vicent de Benicàssim, where the Instituto de Tecnología Cerámica (ITC) as a coordinating entity, through the European LIFE CERSUDS project, is developing a demonstrator of a Sustainable Urban Drainage System.
    The system has the capacity to store rainwater that can later be reused as irrigation water for the maintenance of public space. LIFE CERSUDS will allow the development and validation of the ceramic permeable flooring system based on ceramic tiles with low commercial value, which will be able to significantly reduce surface runoff, “said Javier Mira, ITC’s principal researcher in this project.
    Furthermore, “continues this expert,” we are going to develop similar pre-projects for the municipalities of Aveiro (Portugal) and Fiorano (Italy), countries participating in the LIFE CERSUDS consortium, to boost the replicability of the demonstrator in these cities “.
    The LIFE CERSUDS system consists of a permeable urban pavement formed by ceramic tiles of low commercial value existing in stock. Each module consists of seven tapes obtained from cutting ceramic tiles.
    The demonstrator of the LIFE CERSUDS project is located in the municipality of Benicàssim (Castellón, Spain) and consists of the reurbanization that occupies 3,209.41 m2.
    LIFE CERSUDS is 60% co-financed by the European Commission through the European Union’s LIFE 2014-2020 Environment and Climate Action Programme under reference LIFE15 CCA/ES/000091. This project is supported also by the IVACE of the Generalitat Valenciana.
    In addition to ITC, the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) participates through the Institute of Water Engineering and Environment (IIAMA); the Town Hall of Benicàssim, the Ceramic Centre of Bologna (CCB-Italy), CHM Obras e Infraestructuras, S. A., Centro Tecnológico da Cerâmica e do Vidro (CTCV-Portugal) and the company Trencadís de Sempre, S. L.
