Innovations proposed by experts in Circular Economy
A new system to optimize the collection and classification of waste, among the innovations proposed by experts in Circular Economy. The experts advocate for the development of more economic alternative wastewater treatments, for example using renewable energies.They propose the creation of a platform to promote collaborative eco-design between companies in the Community.
The simplification of materials with multilayer structure, such as those used in ‘briks’, or the development of more efficient alternative treatments to encourage the use of reclaimed water are some of the proposals that the Strategic Committee for Specialized Innovation (CEIE) in Circular Economy has studied on Monday, September 10th in a new meeting to identify innovation opportunities aimed at companies in the Valencia Region.
The working group, in which representatives of the scientific community, technological institutes and the business community take part, advocates the implementation of a new system for marking packaging that will optimise the collection and classification of materials in treatment plants.
The multidisciplinary team that advises the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI) also proposes alternatives to mechanical recycling through new waste recovery techniques, including gasification or composting. The aim is none other than to reduce to a minimum the fraction of rubbish that ends up in the landfill.
Likewise, in order to promote the use of reclaimed water in urban and agricultural environments, they urge the development of alternative treatments with the aim of lowering their cost and incorporating, for example, renewable energy sources. In short, it is a question of improving the quality of this water with the least possible impact on the final amount of the bill of its consumers.
Coordinated by the director of the Instituto Tecnológico del Metal y la Madera (AIDIMME), Mariano Pérez, the committee also proposes to work on new materials and production processes that will extend the useful life of consumer goods.
Sustainable materials
Along these lines, the development of more sustainable materials is also explored, alternatives to those used in the manufacture of products intended for consumption, from packaging in the agrifood sector to electronic components.
The Strategic Committee for Innovation Specialised in Circular Economy is made up of scientists Juan Bautista Carda (Universitat Jaume I), Joaquín Melgarejo and Jorge Olcina (University of Alicante) and includes the participation of José Antonio Costa (Aimplas) and Susana Aucejo (Itene).
The team is completed with Maite Castillo (UBE Corporation Europe), Eva Giner (SPB) and Amelia Navarro (Hidraqua) representing the production system. Eduardo Palomares (Instituto de Tecnología Química-UPV) and Miguel Ángel Martínez (Instituto Tecnológico del Calzado y Conexas) were also invited to this meeting.
In the next meeting, the specialists who make up this multidisciplinary team will analyse the existing capacities in the Valencia Region, the impact of the innovations selected and will study what incentives are required to complete their development.
The final conclusions will be presented to the Strategic Innovation Committee (CEI), chaired by the scientist Avelino Corma, in the coming weeks. The proposed innovations will then be disseminated to the entire productive fabric for subsequent development and implementation.
