RETHINKING PLASTICS – How can the transformation towards Circular Economy work?

The Austrian Economic Chamber – association of the chemical industry and mineral oil in Austria held the convention RETHINKING PLASTICS – How can the transformation towards Circular Economy work? on June 6th 2018 in Vienna. Driven by the latest EU waste legislation developments and ongoing discussions on the use of fossil fuels, representatives from industry, trade and government presented ongoing projects and strategies to foster the transition to a more circular plastics business. Recycling was the big issue, avoidance almost not mentioned, thermal recovery the least favorable option. But some companies already take their responsibility as well as the opportunity to develop more circular product solutions by e.g. using less material through an optimized product design, avoiding composites or preferring recyclable materials. Packaging was a core topic. There is still a long way to go and critical discussions and reflections beyond recycling are necessary.
