Circular economy pilot in the furniture sector

In June 2018, IKEA launched a circular economy pilot initiative called IKEA Tempe in Sydney, Australia.
Customers can fill in an online form and add photos of the IKEA furniture they want to exchange: IKEA then evaluates the product, and eligible items can then be taken back to the store to be resold in exchange for IKEA vouchers. The scheme aims to extend the life cycle of IKEA furniture, rather than products going straight to landfill or incineration.
The service is at the moment only available in the IKEA Tempe store in Sydney. Eligible items are, for example, chairs, tables, sofas and wardrobes, but not kitchen furniture, electrical appliances, or home furnishing accessories. Customers can, if needed, have their piece of furniture brought to the IKEA Temple Store for free.
The new initiative is in line with IKEA’s 2030 sustainability strategy, which also includes targets for circularity.
